可依次采用断缸法找出发生故障的喷油嘴。将发动机怠速运行，依次停止各缸喷油，当某缸停止供油时，若排气不再冒黑烟，发动机转速变化不明显，为该喷油嘴发生故障；若发动机转速下降，工作状况反而变得不好，为该缸喷油嘴工作正常。
喷油嘴的常见故障及其检修方法如下:
喷油嘴不喷油。应检查油路中是否有空气，若有空气及时排除；输油泵供油是否正常；燃油系统是否漏油；喷油针阀是否卡死在针阀孔中。时拆检清洗予以修复。
密封锥面磨损。一般阀体锥角为59°，而针阀锥角为60°，接触面宽度为0.2～0.3mm。若进入喷油嘴的燃油内含有微粒机械杂质，其锥面表面就会磨出沟痕，接触带增宽，燃油便从座面处泄漏滴油，造成焦结积碳，起动困难、冒黑烟、功率下降、油耗增加。应经常清洗养护，时更换新件。
针阀导向表面磨损。针阀体配合间隙很小，仅为0.002～0.004mm，若两零件表面有尘土及机械杂质侵入，就会破坏导向表面的几何精度和光洁度，接触面产生压力和瞬时高温，致使表面发生黏着磨损而卡死。遇此情况应予以更换新件。
轴针和喷孔磨损。燃油以较高压力和速度冲刷，是造成针阀轴针和阀体喷孔磨损的主要形式。同时轴针的喷头部分伸入到燃烧室与燃烧气体接触，使之表面变脆，而产生剥落或梳状沟痕，轴针头由原来圆柱形变为圆锥形，喷孔孔径也磨损增大，失去了正圆形，均导致喷油压力下降，喷雾质量恶化和喷油时间缩短，应予换件修复。
调压弹簧弹力不足。使喷油器喷射压力过低，燃油雾化而无法调整，甚至气缸内压缩气体顶开喷油器针阀，经回油管到高压油泵，导致不泵油而使柴油机熄火。对此应更换新调压弹簧，在无新调压弹簧可换的情况下，可在原调压弹簧与调压弹簧座间，加一个厚度适宜的小垫圈，用以增加弹簧的预紧力来解决弹力不足的问题。
