工作时，燃油从喷油泵经喷油器座进入弹簧室内。此时，喷油阀由于弹簧弹力与燃烧室压力共同作用紧靠在喷嘴体阀座上。燃油经弹簧室和喷嘴体上的两个直通孔进入阀导向部的上部，从螺旋槽流入阀导向部下部，到达阀座。
当燃油压力克服弹簧弹力和燃烧室压力，喷嘴阀离开阀座，燃油较大，从孔径的轴孔流出，进入燃烧室。若燃油压力高，喷嘴阀向下运动到升程档板接近阀体。若压力低落，喷嘴阀将在轴孔内上升。喷油结束时，弹簧弹力和燃烧室压力使喷嘴阀关闭。鲁卡斯有限公司认为这种小型喷油器问世，对满足排放标准作出了重大的贡献。
PT系统是根据压力定时原理工作的，即基于改变流经管子的液体压力，则开口端流出的液体量将随之变化。提高管中压力，则出油量增多。由带调速器的燃油泵，供油管，排油管及喷油器组成，它由三部分组成：齿轮泵、调压器及调速器和节流阀。齿轮泵装在燃油泵的后端，由一对齿轮组成。齿轮泵自油箱吸油，并在一定压力下输送燃油到各喷油器。
调压器是一旁通阀，输往喷油器的压力。调速器和节流阀不取决于调压器的作用，控制调压器的燃油压力。燃油流过调压器到节流轴，.燃油通过节流阀轴四周到调速器怠速喷孔，发动机怠速供油。转速提高（超过怠速），燃油经过节流阀轴节流孔，进入调速器主喷孔。机械式调速器依靠弹簧和重块系统工作，维持怠速供油和切断。调速器随发动机工况而变化。
喷油器用于PT燃油系统的喷油器。这种喷油器中的燃油不断地循环，只是在喷射后的瞬间暂停。燃油由进油接头流入，经喷油器体油道，柱塞周围，喷油器体下端和喷注室之间，再由向上的排油道到排油接头，经油管返回油箱。当柱塞上升时，喷油器油道开启，燃油流过量孔进入喷注室，同时还有燃油从排油孔流回油箱。流入喷注室的燃油由燃油压力控制，而燃油压力则由燃油泵控制。
